Applications for convertible structures have an extensive range and become increasingly popular with builders and architects.

Areas of application

No matter if we are talking about openable roofs for sports stadiums such as the Centre Court at Wimbledon and the stadium in Gelsenkirchen, shopping centers, indoor swimming pools and buildings in research institutions, there is a great need for them in the medium and large-sized building industry.

Mode of operation

To ensure safe and correct operation, the elements are convertible to move considering their structural properties. This is done through a combination of rails or cable systems, slide and drive carriages, drive motor, sensors and control systems.

In addition to the development of individual project-specific systems elnic has responded to the requests of the growing market of convertible systems for small and medium-sized projects and developed modular system solutions.

Architectural ideas can be built individually using basic elements by reducing the system to a modular system with proven long-life components.

The modular elements consist of sliding, drive and control components effectively matched with each other by their interfaces, which allows efficient manufacturing, installation and maintenance.

Single-ply membranes or membrane cushion constructions can be fixed to frame or curved elements or to single breakpoints. These fixed points transfer their load to the elnic slide or drive carriages that can be moved along rails or cable systems.

Drive

elnic’s rope or chain drive systems are connected to one or more gliding/drive carriages and allow the position changes of the system. The design of these drives is usually done primarily to achieve the required speed of the travel process. The dynamic loads onto the construction can be optimized using different acceleration and deceleration speeds.

Clamping / fixing

In frameless systems, the membrane is stretched according to its specifications from the compensation so far that the mechanical properties are achieved. Since the process and tensioning requires different speeds and forces of the drive units, the final tensioning and fixation is mainly done by independent clamping systems.
Motor brakes or locks fix the systems in their final positions.

Controls

For controlling and regulating the sensors and motor functions of the driving and tensioning systems, and for monitoring and controlling the operating conditions adequate control systems need to be integrated. In addition to the individually designed control units of the driving systems elnic offers a variety of options such as weather sensors, remote displays, access for remote diagnostics, etc.
